FAQs

  • Am I eligible for Home Weatherization?
    • You may be eligible for Home Weatherization through South Jersey Gas (SJG) if you meet at least one of the following criteria:
      • Your primary residence is located within a pre-qualified moderate-income census tract. Your census tract can be verified here. You will have to self-certify your income level when scheduling.
      • You are a participant in the New Jersey SHARES (NJ SHARES) federal/safety net partnership program. You will have to provide proof of participation.
      • You have an annual household income between 250% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Levels. See the chart on our website.
    • You also must be a current residential SJG customer with a valid account number, and you must be living in a building with at least one but nor more than eight units (home, apartment, townhouse, etc.) that are individually metered. Homes that are less than five years old or under builder’s warranty are excluded, as are homes in foreclosure, for sale or homes that will be listed for sale. If you don’t own your residence but would still like to participate in the program, you must have the property owner’s permission to do so.
    • If you’re still uncertain about your eligibility, call 1.201.690.7897 to find out if Home Weatherization is right for you.
  • How long will my initial Home Weatherization assessment take?
    • The assessment takes two to three hours. A certified SJG Energy Expert will visit your home to identify energy-saving opportunities, and to perform advanced diagnostic testing, including a blower door test to pinpoint air leaks. If you rent, you must secure your landlord’s approval to receive a blower door test.
  • How much will the additional upgrades cost?
    • All upgrades are provided at no cost for eligible SJG customers.
  • How long does it take to make the recommended upgrades?
    • Your upgrades will be scheduled to be completed within 60 days from the time you receive our recommendations. An approved contractor will work with you to find a date and time that is convenient for you.
    • The choice to move forward with each specific recommendation should be made at the time we call to schedule the work. However, there is no time limit on making the decision to participate in Home Weatherization.
    • If you request more time to decide, we’ll set an approximate time to follow up with you
    • If you decide not to have additional work performed, your project will be closed. It can be reopened if you change your mind later.
    • If a health or safety-related issue is identified, we reserve the right to stop further work or close your project until the issue can be remedied.
  • How will I know if I qualify for the additional upgrades?
    • After the assessment, our Energy Experts will review the findings. Then we’ll determine if additional energy efficiency measures—such as ductwork sealing, an HVAC tune-up, additional insulation, and more—might be right for your home.
    • Once the analysis is complete and additional upgrades are recommended, an authorized SJG contractor will contact you to schedule follow-up work at no cost to you. If a health or safety-related issue is discovered, it must be resolved before any additional work can be completed. Please note that this process may take up to 60 days after your assessment is completed.
    • If we determine that no additional work is required at your home, we’ll notify you.
    • If you have any questions during this time, please contact us at 1.201.690.7897.
  • What are the qualifications of the Energy Experts and participating contractors?
    • SJG Energy Experts are experienced in residential energy conservation, construction, and building diagnostics. They are Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified professionals.
    • Our participating contractors are licensed in the state of New Jersey and have provided references, qualifications, and evidence of insurance.
  • What happens if the Energy Expert finds mold or unsafe moisture levels?
    • If we detect mold or unsafe moisture levels, we will notify you immediately.
    • If unsafe moisture conditions exist, the Energy Expert or contractor will attempt to identify the source of the moisture and try to fix the problem before work can continue. If the source of the moisture cannot be identified, fixed or controlled by the contractor you must have the issue remediated through outside means before further work may continue
    • Further work under the program may continue 30 days after remediation is successfully completed.
